Chonburi Terminal Achieves Challenging Safety Target

Kuwait Petroleum International’s absolute commitment to health and safety is apparent in every aspect of our business, from head offices to depots and terminals.

The latest example of these high standards is at Q8Aviation’s fuel storage and supply terminal at Chonburi in Thailand, which recently achieved the challenging target of 20,000 continuous man hours of work, uninterrupted by injury or illness.

Chonburi Terminal is located around 100 kilometres south of Bangkok and has eight tanks for jet fuel storage, with a total capacity of almost 100,000 M3. The day to day operation is contracted to Intertek, a leading international provider of quality and safety services, which provides two employees.

The demanding safety target for the terminal agreed between Q8Aviation’s Operations Director, Richard Crowe, and Operations Manager Thailand, Sudtiporn Suwannawong, was 20,000 man hours without a ‘Lost Workday Case’ (LWC). This is defined as a day when an employee is unable to work a scheduled shift owing to a work related injury or illness, excluding traffic or commuting accidents.

It took almost four years to reach this milestone. In recognition of their contribution, Intertek employees Somsak Wattanapimol and Ekachai Jinachok have been presented with certificates signed by Q8Aviation Managing Director, Andrew Westmoreland.

Richard Crowe says: “We recognise that in order to implement effectively KPI’s Safety, Security, Health and Environmental Management System (SSHEMS), we must extend beyond our own employees to our suppliers and contractors. Setting a target for our contractor in Thailand gave the clear message that we expect a high level of SSHE performance and I believe made the two employees feel that they had a real part to play in Q8Aviation’s drive to reduce Lost Workday Cases.”

Andrew Westmoreland adds: “Setting measurable targets is an excellent way to maintain a close attention to safety. We are always keen to recognise the contribution that individuals make towards maintaining a safe working environment.”

To ensure a continuing focus on safety at Chonbury Terminal, a new equally challenging LWC target and other measures have already been introduced.
